What Causes Dry And Hoarse Cough In A 4 Year Old?

My 4 year old doesn't have a fever, but has a dry, hoarse sounding cough and complains of her throat hurting. She seems fine other than the cough.

What do you recommend and do you think I need to take her to the doctor? She is typically very healthing

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello. Thank you for your question. The type of cough you describe is most commonly caused by a virus, even in the absence of fever, which ultimately resolves on it's own. However, it can often be caused by seasonal allergy as well. In this case, if she is able to function and participate in her daily activities without a problem, you don't necessarily have to do anything. If she can't, however, you may want to consider a long acting anti-histamine medication. If so, I recommend consulting with your doctor so the appropriate treatment plan can be implemented.
