Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for the safety of Atenolol as an antihypertensive drug.

Well, edema in both the feet could be caused by any associated kidney or heart disease. Uncontrolled hypertension may result into heart failure and kidney impairment in which the salt and water (fluids) get accumulated in the dependent parts like feet, ankle or lower back (in a bed ridden patient).

I would advise you to consult a cardiologist for further evaluation like Kidney function tests, ECG & Echocardiography to detect the possible cause of the dependent edema. You may need water pill like furosemide for temporary relief.
Meanwhile restrict your dietary salts, avoid taking salted snacks, potato chips, etc.

Hope this suggestion could be useful to you in getting the treatment for your feet edema.

Take care.
