What Causes Episodes Of Raised Heart Beats?

My heart has been racing on and off for about 4 years. Always checks out fine at the doctor's. I am in my mid 40's about 30 pounds overweight, do not drink or smoke and do get exercise. When I am physically active, I notice it does not occur very often. When I am not as active for a day or two, it does occur often. I have hypothyroidism which is under control with medication, and am peri-menopausal. Both I attribute to the weight issues. Thanks!

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms seem to be related to overweight and low physical activity.

The thyroid dysfunction could also mimic this clinical scenario.

Anyway, I would recommend a complete check up including :

- resting ECG
- chest x ray study
- blood lab tests (complete blood count, blood electrolytes, fasting glucose, cortisol plasma levels, kidney and liver function tests).

An ambulatory 24-48 hours monitoring and a cardiac ultrasound would be necessary to exclude possible cardiac arrhythmia if suspicions for such disorder are raised during the above tests.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best regards,

Dr. Iliri
