What Causes Extreme Sore Throat And Ears With Nasty Smell In Throat?

My son is at university and has had an extreme sore throat and ears for almost 2 weeks. He saw the doctor and they did a strep test which is negative. He is now on antibiotics ! (24 hours now) but not feeling any better. He can t eat or drink. He had a fever about 10 days ago but not now. He does have a bit of a headache and is exhausted. The doctor said his throat was nasty and smelly?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of extreme sore throat and ears with nasty smell in throat which seems to be due to infection in sinuses leading to sinusitis and progressive further and leading to granular pharyngitis. As you had strep test which is a bacterial infection comes out to be negative there are more possible chances that you have a viral infection. I would suggest you to do warm saline gargles 3 to 4 times a day. Take ibuprofen one tablet twice daily. Take throat lozanges after every 4 hours is helpful. Visit ENT specialist once and get blood and throat swab test done and start treatment after proper diagnosis. Drink luke warm water throughout the day as it can provide relief. Avoid hot, sharp and spicy liquids.
