General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Delayed periods can be due to different possible causes. The most common reasons are:
(1) PCOS- polycystic ovarian syndrome. An ultrasound and blood tests are needed to determine if this is present
(2) emotional stress or illness
(3) physical illness
(4) thyroid disease
(5) high levels of a hormone called prolactin
(6) inadequate diet
(7) excess activity

Blood tests would help determine if any of these are present.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
