What Causes Fever And Runny Nose?

My nine month old has started running a low grade fever (100 - 100.8) and has begun startling in his sleep. I thought he might be teething, as he also has a runny nose, but he's never startled before while teething. It's enough to wake him up over and over again. He's very clingy and fussy as well, and his cheeks are bright red. It's been going on two days. Ideas?

Hello. Thank you for your question. The most common diagnosis based on the symptoms you describe is a self limiting viral illness. Generally this means treat the fever with a fever reducer when necessary, maintain hydration, and give it time. However, in a baby so young, it's always a good idea to get checked out after 2-3 days of symptoms, just to make sure it is nothing else, such as a bacterial infection.
