What Causes Fits And Aggressive Behaviour In A Child?
hello - I have a 5 1/2 year old girl. I adopted her 2 1/2 years ago. she throws fits like you wouldn t believe. they have gotten shorter in length of how long they last, but the older she get the more violent she gets. she does things she knows she is not supposed to do. example: this morning, the daycare teacher told her to sit in the chair and not stand. she said NO - got down and starting throwing chairs. I know that with me - she doesn t get like this. she knows the teachers are the boss, but doesn t seem to care. I describe this like a 15 year old who has the attitude of I will do what I want, and I don t care but she is 5 and getting ready to start kindergarden in the fall. the daycare is frustrated with her, I am frustrated because I know that she knows better and she doesn t have that significant of outbursts with me. any advice?
Hi, Thanks for asking. I can understand your concerns. If such a child comes in my clinic I would like to do a behavioural analysis for her. It includes checking when the behaviour occurs, what happens just before the behaviour and why the behaviour is maintained. I would suggest you that when ever she throws a tantrum set her in a time out corner for 5 minutes. If she does something like throwing the chair then withdraw her favourite activity or toy. Praise her and reward her for her good behaviour. Catch her being good. Also telling her social stories and doing role play and role reversal is a good way to model appropriate behaviour for her. Also I would like to do a sensory profile for her to rule out any sensory processing disorder being as the cause of her behaviour. U hope I have helped you. Thank you.
