What Causes Foul Smelling Belches?

my husband is having very foul smelling belches it smells up a room like someone had a bowl movement. He has been diagnosed with diverticulitus in the past, however this has been going on for about a week now, he is worried. Could smoking mojo cause problems in this area? He is 47 years old. He has lots of gas and problems with going to the bathroom frequently.
