What Causes Frequent Bowel Movement With Mucous Discharge While Having Diverticulosis?

I have had abdominal discomfort since Tuesday (4/11). I was constipated before the symptoms started but now have frequent stools with some mucous. I was told several years that I have diverticulosis but it was found on a routine colonoscopy and was asymptomatic. My abdomen just feels uncomfortable and today my temp is 99.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history and understood your concerns.
Your finding of diverticulosis was an incidental finding few years ago and may not be the cause at the moment.
Since you have frequent stools with mucus the possible causes can be as follows:
Colonic infection with ulceration or so.
An attack of diverticulitis.
Cancer of the colon.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get the clinical evaluation bya General Surgeon or a Gastroenterologist.
CT scan of the abdomen and colonoscopy are the most important investigations to pinpoint the cause.
Tests of stool and blood.
A course of an antibiotic active against intestinal infection and Metronidazole may solve your problem if the problem is due to intestinal infection alone.
Also take probiotics, curds/yogurt, bananas.
Avoid all the foods and beverages that cause the problems.
