What Causes Frequent Urination In An Elderly Person?

My father is 69 years old. He says that he is up every half hour to urinate. He also says they are occasions that he loses his bladder at least once a week. He has lost approximately 50 pds in the last year and a half intentionally. But in general he says that he just does not feel good. He said that his family doctor has tested him 3 times in the last 6 months for prostate cancer but that has been normal. Any ideas or suggestions?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for contacting HCM.
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concern.
Frequent urination is very common in elderly men and a detailed evaluation may be needed to find out the exact cause of it.
Check his blood sugar.Undetected diabetes is a common cause of increased urination and weight loss.
Prostate related problem is another cause.BPH(Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy, condition where prostate becomes abnormally large) is more common than cancer and he may require an ultrasound scan to rule out this.Consult a urologist for confirmation.
The other important causes are neurological problems, alcohol, some drugs like diuretics.
Consult a General physician, he will do base line investigations and guide you accordingly.

Wishing you good health.
With regards.
