What Causes Gagging In Babies?

Hi, I was talking with my daughter-in-law today about my 3 week old grandson. She said that there are times when he acts as if he is gagging (she said it's like he is dry heaving), and it is usually not when he is eating. She said it just happens every once in a while. I told her to tell her pediatrician at the baby's next appointment. Is it something she should call about sooner?
