Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have suffered for a long time with a post nazal drip and severe acid stomach which an old physician used to treat with nose spray and a short course of antibiotics twice per year when the alergy seasons were at their height. Now, all I can hear is about GERD and my stomach is constantly sour, sore with flatulence and burning. The old physician dies and since one doctor diagnosed GERD, all others seem to follow without any reference to past successful treatment.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood the concerns. GERD is usually not associated with any allergic phenomenon as you are suspecting. The cause of the GERD lies in the lax lower esophageal sphincter and/or hiatus hernia. Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation: Consult a Gastroenterologist for proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations of an upper GI Endoscopy, barium studies and any other investigations as deemed necessary. This will get a proper diagnosis which is very important for proper management. Till then get started on a PPI like Omeprazole, antacid when on empty stomach. Soft bland diet. Most important is to avoid stress and anxiety at any cost. Further management as per the findings.
