What Causes High Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Levels?

My father is in the hospital with high CO2 levels. He is on 24 hour O2, has been for years. I am waiting on a call from his doctor. He has been in the hospital for alomost a week, and his levels are not dropping. Why is this? What are they going to do to keep this from happening again?

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Inadequate oxygenation due to decrease oxygen intake secondary to lung disorders is common cause of high carbon dioxide levels.
2. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or acute respiratory distress syndrome are common causes. Chest X-ray or CT scan would show the abnormality in lung.
3. Give oxygen at higher saturation would be helpful at present, till the lung improves. Avoiding the cause is necessary. If more details are available, I can help you further.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
