What Causes High Cholesterol Levels?

Hello. I have a feeling whereby I can t catch my breath. It occurs always upon waking up and throughout the day off and on. I have controlled asthma, but no wheezing. I m pretty sure I have anxiety...runs in the family. No gastro challenges, no pulmonary challenges...blew into that (mouth) machine and have the lungs of a 30 year old I m told (I m a 57 year old healthy female, 5 4 , 142 lbs.), run 3-4 miles 2X/week, have been running since I was in high school. Strength train too. My diet is great. 2-3 glasses red wine/night. low blood pressure always. go to gyn annually, dermatologist annually and primary care annuall. One time did a stress test, they found that a valve didn t shut all the way. Had recent lung xray done...negative. Vit D has been low in the past but not anymore. Recently cholesterol showed high, however, didn t fast morning of test and the week prior we were at our cottage and had bacon/eggs every morning and grilled every night (this is done probably twice a year) and we eat pasta every other night with meat every other and large salads every night along with a starch of some sort). I m also on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy...dose is so low that the pharmacist said it was hard to compound (estradiol, testerone, progesterone, estrogen, dhea comgination). So, I m hoping you might offer your medical opinion.

Hi,

It would have been useful if you had provided the actual values of the test. Lipid profile should be taken with the patient fasting, so it may have affected the cholesterol values, however without knowing the actual values it's hard to say whether that is enough to justify it or not.

As for what causes high cholesterol in general, it is to a point predetermined genetically, but is also affected by unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka,
