What Causes Hot Flashes With Excessive Sweating At Night?

My husband is 66 years old. Lately he has started what I would describe as"hot flashes" at night that completely saturated the sheets and he is so damp that he had to get up and take a shower in the middle of the night. What causes this and is there a way to prevent it?
