What Causes Hypnic Jerks?

I have an 18 year old daughter who has had body shudders (like when you get a cold chill up her spine) but they are getting more severe and more frequent. She is under a lot of stress right now. Her father suffers from epilepsy but he never had any type of issue like this, he has grand mal and petit mal seizures. She does not get disoriented after these shutters and they are very quick. Sometime one or both of her arms jolt up when she shudders. Having lived with her father for over 20 years, my brain immediately goes to some kind of epilepsy, but again, she never gets disoriented. I have also heard that many teenagers go through this but not sure if I should get her checked out.
