What Causes Inconsistencies In Periods?

I am 49 years old. About 2-3 months ago I was under alot of stress much more than usual. During the time of stress I started my period. The flow was very very heavy. Normal for me is light for about 4 days. The cycle unfortunately didnt stop. There is no discomfort or pain just the bleeding. It is still going on now but it may last less than an hour a day as little as a few minutes. When I m home relaxing I have little to no bleeding. What could this be?
