What Causes Inflammation In The Esophagus While Suffering From Alzheimer S Disease?

My 94 year old mother has mid-stage Alzheimer s and recently had an endoscopy to clear her esophagus when she choked on a bite of sandwich. They discovered that her esophagus was badly inflamed. The poceedure was very hard on her. How to evaluate whether the inflammation has been helped by 6 weeks of medicine and change of diet? Is there a different less invasive way to see what is happening in her esophagus? Thank you for your help - YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Although resolution of symptoms ,like burning pain, may indicate that it is healed, however i am afraid that there is no such test other then OGD which can tell us exactly. Its only the OGD that we directly see the esophagus if it is healed or not.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
