What Causes Intermittent Pain In The Breast For A Couple Of Weeks?

Hi, I am a 17 year old girl who has been experiencing chest/breast pain for a few weeks now, and its not going away. There is no specific pattern to the pain, it just comes on randomly a few times each day. The pain will be on the upper right side of my breast, like where people put there hand when they sing the National Anthem. It will also be just below my armpit, just next to my right breast. Then the pain is sometimes, I don t really know how to describe this, in my breast/just under it. The pain last for a while, not an hour, but somewhere between 5 and 30 minutes. The pain is constantly sharp and sore, it will intensify at times too. The pain level is around a 6, I can deal with it, but it is very uncomfortable. I m worried that it could be a heart problem, cancer, or something bad. The only heart problem I have is a very small heart murmur that doesn t effect me ever. I don t know if this is just some anxiety or a real problem.... I do have major anxiety, and I ve been told that this could be my chest muscles spasming because of the stress. Should I go to my doctor? Thank you for your advice.

OBGYN 's  Response
Hello,

Firstly, the majority of the pains are not dangerous. They are often due to transient muscle spam, bad posture, exertion, mineral deficiencies and so on. However, a persisting moderate pain not relieved by rest or medication has to be evaluated further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shanti Vennam, OBGYN
