What Causes Irregularities In Periods?

Hi doctor,
i m having irregular periods.my periods flow will b for 5days n sometime it will stop in the 7 day,but this time the periods is continuing for 17 days n yet dint stopped.my doctor suggesed to take Trapic MF...can i use that tablet??? does it stops my periods????
