Hi,I am Diwashish Biswas (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Itching Sensation While On Sertraline HCL And Hydroxyzine HCL?
I am looking for some link between my mother-in-laws drugs and her itching her skin to the point that she has open sores, especially on her back. Been to a dermatologist, did a skin culture and she had a staph infection which was treated with Keflex/3pills/day X 10 days. It was better but not gone. Her meds are: 150 mg Raditidine X2/day, Sertraline HCL 50 mg tablet daily, Carvedilol 3.125 mg tablet daily, Hydroxyzine HCL 10 mg tablet at bedtime, St Joseph low dose aspirine 81 mg/daily, Arthritis Pain Relief 650 mg tablet AM and PM. Any link between all these and the severe itching she has been experiencing for almost a year? She will be 95 in January.
If only itching is there without any rashes or skin lesion which are progressive in nature since 1 year, I think it can be due to increased sweating caused by sertraline.
Sweating will increases the chances of skin infections which your mother in law developed recently. To maintain proper hygiene of her. Apply clotrimazole powder.
Give her waterbed or other soft beds. Keep her in lateral positions for 15-20 minutes 3-4 times a day to prevent bed sores.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
