Good Morning and Welcome to HealthcareMagic,
Your problem is weight loss/past history of anemia and your question is would you lose weight if you took apetamin in the short term and is it right for you.
First, let's look at apetamin. This drug is a combination of an antihistamine similar to "benadryl" as it is commonly known, and lysine, an
amino acid found in foods.
Antihistimines, in general, are known to increase appetite and to cause weight gain. I have not seen them be particularly effective myself. As for apetamin, I don't feel that is your answer.
Think back to when you were adding the Mass Gainer shake to your diet and you were happier with your weight and think of your body as a furnace burning wood. Your furnace burns a lot of wood so you need a lot of fuel. You simply are not giving it enough calories to maintain weight for your furnace needs or, rather, body requirements and activity.
The best way to gain weight is to fill yourself with healthy fats such as olives, avocados, nuts, seeds and complex carbohydrates together at the same time in the same meal. Also, strength training to gain muscle which weighs more than fat so that when you do gain weight it turns to muscle and not body fat. It takes a good extra 500 calories per day to put on one pound per week of weight.
You may also try adaptogenic teas that make one feel better and want to eat such as
ginseng.
Before you take apigen, take a look at possible side-effects:Some of the common side effects are: nausea,
vomiting, head aches,
hypertension,
diarrhea, chest pains,
dry mouth, confusion, scratchy throat, and, curiously, a loss of appetite. Serious side effects that may be a signal of an
allergic reaction to the drug are: intense excitement, rashes, problems with vision, difficulty urinating, and weakness in the body. Please proceed to your doctor immediately if these problems occur.
I do hope this answers your question. Kathy Shattler, MS, RDN
