What Causes Left-sided Abdominal Pain Below The Ribs?

I am having sharp stabbing pains on left side of abdomen just below my rib cage. The pain also shoots straight though to my back in the same area. Sitting seems to cause most pain and the only relief I get is if I lay down in bed. Its been going on for about 36 hours now and not getting any better.

Dear the pain may be due to acute gastritis or peptic ulcer disease or left renal calculi or colitis or left hydronephrosis etc..

you may need abdomen scan please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.
