What Causes Leg Cramps While On Simvastatin And HCTZ?
I started Atkins Diet on Sunday, March 18th. I am a 64 yr old woman, 152 lbs, 5 2. I did this diet 24 years ago for a short time with great results. But now I am on Simvastatin and HCTZ. Last night and this evening I have developed leg pain (not cramps) of an achy nature. This evening the pain became increasingly worse which concerned me. I drank 20 ounces of water and the pain has subsided. I did read in the book that loss of electrolytes is possible. I was most concerned about potassium. Went to the pharmacy and got Hydralyte (tablets like Alka Seltzer) and was ready to take it but said I should consult with my doctor if I have HBP. My blood pressure and cholesterol are good. I just want to lose 10-15 lbs. I would do this short term but am I looking for problems?

Likely the cramps that occur in the course of diuretic therapy are attributed to electrolyte disturbances or volume contraction. I suggest you to do an electrolyte blood levels for further evaluation.
