My period was suppose to come December 1, I was two days late. It came today but it came light and it s not heavy or bad cramps like my normal periods be. Still the sore and itchy boobs, back and left side pains. Could this be a regular period or a sign of pregnancy??

Hallow Dear,

Though missing a period is the first cardinal symptom of early pregnancy, some times, occasionally some amount of light to regular bleeding may show at or around the expected date of menstruation. In good old days, it was named as Placental sign. This light bleeding could be this bleeding.

Some abnormal pregnancies like Ectopic pregnancy, Threatened abortion may present with initial light bleeding which later may become considerable. However, this conditions may be associated with pain in abdomen when the bleeding increases.

Your tender breasts are supporting the possibility of pregnancy. However, I am concerned about pain on the left side of abdomen. It may be suggesting ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy implanted somewhere outside the uterine cavity - commonly tube). Such pregnancy does not grow and may rupture causing severe bleeding requiring emergency surgical intervention with many units of blood transfusion.

At this stage, just 2 days after the missed period, pregnancy test on urine will not be reliable and may report false negative. Instead, Beta hCG test on blood will be useful and reliable. Values under 5 mIU/ml denote no pregnancy while values above 25 mIU/ml are diagnostic of pregnancy. Values between these two denote week positive test which can be due to ectopic pregnancy.

Of course, it could just be the starting of your normal menses also.

Please report to your Gynaecologist ASAP considering the pain in left flanks.

I hope you will take due action in time.
