What Causes Lightheadedness?

Hello, I have a question on a health issue. Last Dec 13, I fainted, went to hospital, was checked out for everything under the sun. Fainted for less the a minute. I have a slight heart mummur[had scarlet fever when I was 12 yrs.old.] When in hospital they checked for everything ekg, heart monitor, sugar, [had my thyroid killed with radiation last summer][it was 2 1/2 times the limit] that was in range when they did these test,.had tilt test. They said I was disgnose with having syncope. This had happened two more times in Jan. of this year. Same thing, went to hospital they did ct scans[ fell and split my head open] ,ent, hearing tested. I am now going to neurologist, he had me have a eeg and a mri, they came out fine, he has put me on a seizure medicine[Levetiracetam].Doing better but still have a few of lightheadedness. Just wondering if anyone of you would know what is wrong with me. My blood pressure has been with limits also. Just getting tired of not knowing what is causing this. Thank You.

Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I read carefully your question and would explain that as all your tests have shown nothing abnormal, your symptoms could be related to vaso-vagal syncope or seizures.

But as EEG has resulted normal, seizures are less likely.

I would like to know more about these episodes:

-Do you feel them coming? Are there any specific signs so you can predict them?
- Do you remember how they occur?
- Do you fall abruptly or try to hold on something to protect yourself from falling?
- Do you regain conscience immediately or you feel dizzy and foggy for some hours later, after these episodes?

All these characteristics can help differentiate between a seizure and a syncope. In case of syncope, levetiracetam would be unnecessary.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards, Dr. Aida
