What Causes Loose Bright Red Bowel Movement?

My hubby has had stomach problems for a long time. Recently he was having severe pains in his upper and lower abdomen. We went to the PA Dr. and he had blood samples taken and stool samples taken. The next day it was worse and we took him to the ER. because his loose stools were real dark then the last one was bright red. More blood samples were taken and a prilosec to take and a prescription to take the generic twice a day for 30 days. He did start to feel good and his stools became firmer than they have been for years, but they have been loosening up again and he is wondering if that is too much since the package said take one a day for 14 days then none for 4 months. What is your opinion?

Hi,
Thanks for writing your query.

After reading your post, it seems that your husband is having bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract.
Prilosec advised by his doctor will help but he needs to be investigated for knowing the cause and location of the bleed.

An endoscopy and a colonoscopy along with a CT scan of the abdomen will be helpful.

Following precautions will be beneficial for him :-
1.Avoid spicy and oily foods.
2.Avoid being empty stomach for long periods.
3.Avoid mental and emotional stress.
4.Avoid smoking and alcohol, if any
5.Avoid self medications, especially pain killers and steroids.
6.Drink lots of water daily.
7.Curd will be beneficial.

Antacids in the form of liquid or gel form are also beneficial as they form a protective coating over the damaged mucosa of the gastrointestinal tract.

I hope this is helpful to you.
Thanks.
