Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my mother is having an issue where there are times when she feels the need to burp and does but according to her she gets no relief from burping and she says when trying to burp to get relief she feels like she is losing her breath. after a good burp the feeling eventually goes away but then it returns. This normally causes her to panic and not eat
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history related to your Mother having need to burp, without any relief from burping, looses breath on trying to burp purposefully, causing her to panic and not to eat. The commonest causes are: Psychological imbalance, some sort of stress and/or anxiety and may need special consultations. Loose lower esophageal sphincter. Aerophagia. I would advise her the following in such a situation: Upper GI Endoscopy. Barium swallow. CT scan of the head to rule out any central causes. Ultrasonography of the abdomen and clinical evaluation to find the cause, get the diagnosis and to plan a proper treatment. This may be a multi-specialty thing to do.
