What Causes Low Blood Sugar Levels?

My husbnd has been on two new Rs for a couple days. This a..m he had very low blood sugar, spoke with his Dr. and had his orange juice and ate breakfast and seemed to be doing better Now, he did eat a bowl of soup earlier, not dinner until ~5-6 hours later (now) because the blood sugar is now only 53 again - could the RX be the problem ? What to do? He did just drink some more oj, how often should we check the blood sugars??

Hello,

You have not mentioned what treatment your husband is taking. Some drugs like B blockers, MAO B inhibitors, haloperidol et cetera cause a fall in blood sugar levels. You have to check with your physician whether the drugs he has prescribed are causing low blood sugar.

Meanwhile, you should keep giving him frequent meals to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. Keep glucose powder handy in case there is any sudden fall in blood sugar. Keep checking his blood sugar at 6 hourly intervals.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
