Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I m researching low platelets. I m a health 32 year old female. 5 7, 120 lbs. During a physical a lab came back indicating low platelets, 105,000. A redraw 6 days later showed 87,000. A few years ago before a sinus surgery it was mentioned my platelets were low but I don t know the amount. What are likely causes?
Hi, I have gone through your query. There are multiple causes of low platelet count like chronic liver disease, ITP, aplastic anemia, certain drugs, etc. If you are not having any other co-morbidities, then most likely its idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura but you must have work-up done for other disorders to rule out other causes. After your physician rules out other causes, then IV glucocorticoids and IV Immunoglobulins can be started for treatment. And always report to the local physician in case of bleeding from any site or if bruises appear on any part of your body. I hope, my answer will help you. Regards, Dr. Maria Daud
