What Causes Low Platelet Count While On Indomethacin And Lisinopril?

My husband has recently developed a persistent cough and has been taking indomethacin 25 mg and lisinopril 20 mg. He has seen his doctor recently who ordered blood test and his blood platelet count is low. Is there a possibility that the side effects of these two medication has something to do with the symptons I have described? We are trying to set an appointment for him to see a hematologist but have been told it could be 2 days before an appointment is available. Should I try to find a hematologist sooner if this is urgent? Any suggestions is much appreciated we aren t sure if his condition is an emergency. Thanks

Hello,

Low platelet count is side effect associated with Indomethacin. My suggestions in the case:
• Stop Indomethacin right now, consult later hematologist after 2 days no emergency at all
• Continue Lisinopril
• Maintain hydration with plenty of liquids
• Observe for any unusual bleeding from body site like blood in vomit, sputum, stool, saliva, nose, and urine in which case consult ER

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel
