Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Low Platelet Count With High Bilirubin Level In A Teenager?
My 18 year old son has low platelet count of 49. He has had his platelets tested 5 times and the platelets are always around the same (46-52). Everything else is pretty close to normal. His bilirubin is a little high (1.8) He has had thorough bloodwork and an ultrasound of his spleen and all ok. What could be the cause of this and should I be concerned? The Hemotologist wants to do a bone marrow test next and maybe give him steroids. P.S. My son feels completely fine and shows now signs of any bruising anywhere (even on his arm after getting his blood taken) Thank you! Erin
Though the platelet counts are not producing any bruises, persistently low levels are always considered pathologic. There can be idiopathic thrombocytopenia or else, which has to be evaluated in greater details with bone marrowbiopsy for further course of action and guidelines. Kindly follow all advise of his pediatrician for best results without any panic or prejudice.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
