What Causes Low White Blood Cell Count In Blood Test?

Hi Doctor, I am 73 year old female, never had any history of cancer, whenever I have a blood test once a year, my white blood cells keeps reducing, the pathology result indicates that I have a mild neutropenia, possibly due to medication or virus, but what medication would cause this condition and how to increase the WBC. Thank you for your attention. Winnie

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. Mild reduction in white cell count is not to be worried about.
2. If you have an infection and white cell count is low, then only it is worrisome. Certain medications can affect the bone marrow and reduce counts. However, you would have associated anemia and thrombocytopenia also.
3. Have a good nutritious diet, moderate exercise and good sleep. Relax and avoid stress, it will be helpful.
Hope it helps.
