What Causes Mucus In Stools After Recovering From Diverticulitis?

A month ago I had diveticulitis and was put on antibiotics Flagyl and Augmentin. The Augmentin gave me severe diarrehea, I had diarrehea for almost 2 weeks, had a stool test for C-diff that came back negative after i stopped the antibiotics for a week. I have been better but just 2 days ago I started passing mucus from my rectum. Today I have gone several times with the passing of mucus but no diarrehea. Can you tell me what could be causing this?? I was eating a Nutri Grain bar everyday and I also have IBS.

Hello,

You are suffering from mucus in the stool. Different digestive problems can make more mucus show up in your stool.
* Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) causes mucus in your stool.
* Crohn’s disease causes mucus in stool, almost like it is another type of IBD.
* Ulcerative colitis is another medical condition in which inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes sores in the intestines. They can bleed and make pus and mucus in the stool.

Sometimes, it may also occur after a food poisoning. Get clinically examined by a GP, get Stool examination (R/E and C/S), colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, imaging tests (X-ray, CT, MRI) done to detect the pathology causing the symptoms.

Your treating doctor will recommend diet control to help control your symptoms. You should avoid certain foods like full fat dairy products, gluten, fried food, beans/legumes, insoluble fiber, sweeteners, highly processed food, etc. to help you manage symptoms of IBS.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
