What Causes Muscle Spasms And Leg Swelling After Hip Replacement?

I had a total hip replacement one week ago. Was up the following day and am now home (with help) getting about on crutches. I was only experiencing mild pain on leaving hospital but since have experienced severe muscle spasm in the quad muscles , mostly in the night - and for no apparent reason. I have taken stronger pain killers since experiencing the spasms, which have helped a little but my leg is now swollen down to my foot making excercises stiff and difficult. Is this normal, as early days and can I expect it to ease with time?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As a first line management you can take analgesics like paracetamol or aceclofenac for pain relief.

If symptoms persists you can consult an orthopaedician and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
