What Causes Nausea And Missed Periods?

Hello, me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex on October 3rd, he did not ejaculate inside me. I had my last period September 26-1st. I am two days late on my expected period, I am feeling my lower stomach a little firm, I am not feeling nauseous, no cravings, no change, nothing different. I wanted to know if there could be a chance that I am pregnant. Or if something else is causing this.

Hallow Dear,

If you had your period on 26th of September through 1st of October, the chances of pregnancy due to unprotected sexual relationship on 3rd October are very meagre.

The egg is released (ovulation) 14 days prior to the next expected menses. Egg has a life of 24 hours while the sperms are active for 3 days. Hence, a period of about one week around the day of ovulation is considered as fertile window. I shall presume your cycle to be of 30 days. Hence the day of ovulation would be 12th October and the fertile window would be form 8th October to 16th October. Thus 3rd October falls away from the fertile window.

Missing a period is the first cardinal symptom of early pregnancy. All other symptoms; i.e. nausea & vomiting with pica, frequent urination and breast symptoms start about a week after missing a period. So I would not attribute this nausea and altered tastes for food to the pregnancy; it may be due to stress of pregnancy. Moreover, delay in menses for just two days can happen even without pregnancy also.

However, to confirm your pregnancy status, you have got following options:

1. Wait for 4-5 days more. If still you do not get menses, perform pregnancy test on overnight morning first sample of urine. Earlier, these tests may report false negative results.

2. Alternatively, you may opt for Beta hCG test on the blood anytime now onwards. This is very sensitive and specific test and will give you reliable results.

I hope this provides you the relevant guidance.
