What Causes Night Sweats Along With Severe Fatigue?

Occasionally I will have night sweats, and wake up and feel like I have had no sleep and be exhaused and cannot go to work. I m 4 months from finishing chemo from stage 3 colon cancer. I did 7 cycles of chemo over approximately 7 months. I have peripheral neuropathy in my fingers and feet, and I have lost my finger prints on my fingers and toes that has gotten worse since stopping chemo. The bottom of my feet have a almost a shine to them now. My final PET scan came back negitive. I also have PSC and was diagnosed in 2006. During Chemo, I had to have 2 ERCP s to to open up bile ducts. At this point, I believe the PSC is back under control. What is causing these sweats out of the blue, and why is my PN getting worse, not better?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Excessive sweating at night may indicate lore or less serious issues. It may be a warning sign of thyroid problems, diabetes or infection. Excessive sweating is also more common in people who are overweight or out of shape The good news is that most cases of excessive sweating are harmless.

The main conditions and medicines that can cause your symptom are:
-obstructive sleep apnoea –-hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), which is commonly associated with diabetes and taking insulin -infections – tuberculosis, endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valves), osteomyelitis (a bone infection), abscesses and HIV/AIDS and Hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid gland As endocrinologist,my advice for you is to do the diabetes screening test, and the thyroid function test(TSH,free t3 and free T4).

Some serious things such as lymphoma are possible cause, and should be ruled out if symptoms persist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
