What Causes Numbness And Tingling In Mouth After A Head Injury?

Bumped the back of my head earlier today. After about an hour the roof of my mouth was tingly and a little numb. Numbing progressed to the top tooth area and then to the tip of my top lip. Was slurring my words for a little. Now it feels better. Should I go to hospital?

Neurologist 's  Response
Good morning. My name is Dr. Dariush Saghafi and I am a neurologist from the Cleveland, Ohio region of the world. Greetings to wherever you may be reaching out from this morning.

Expected after effects of a good whack to the back of the head could include a bit of numbness and tingling in the areas you describe. This is because cranial nerves responsible for sensation to the mouth and face are in that region. So long as there is no nausea, vomiting, feelings of faintness, throbbing pain in the head or neck that is not getting better then, I don't believe an ER visit is necessary. However, a visit to your doctor for a quick neurological checkup as soon as possible and to report the head injury and how well you're recovering is certainly practicing good "patient" medicine so that I would counsel you to do.

If you feel this information is useful to you would you consider giving a STAR rating to the response I've given? This would be greatly appreciated. Also, if you'd like to ask me any other questions directly I'd be happy to answer them. Use the following web address to ask me a DIRECT QUERY question at your leisure:
