What Causes Numbness And Tingling Sensation In The Left Quadrant?
Hello. I am experiencing skin numbness isolated to the dorsal surface of my left quad. The numbness is of the skin only, and sometimes presents as a sharp stinging, especially at night. If I press against the front of my left hip bone, I can trigger a nerve response similar to if you hit your funny bone in your elbow. The response can be felt down the surface of the skin on that left leg into the numb area. The area is also hyper sensitive to almost any stimulation. This has been present on and off for over 10 years, but seems to be more persistent as of late and possibly getting worse. I did read somewhere that some nerve that serves that area can be affected if it runs across the top of the hip bone in that area... Seems that I read it could be surgically fixed... Any ideas or recommendations?? Thanks. Brian Hauser YYYY@YYYY
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
I have noted your symptoms. These could be related to meralgia paresthetica, where the skin nerve in outer aspect of thigh (lateral femoral cutaneous nerve) gets pinched under a ligament in groin. Initial treatment is with medications such as gabapentin or pregabalin capsules. If medicines do not work, then, a minor surgery can be done, as you have mentioned.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
