What Causes Obstruction In Throat While Having Food?

my husband ate one bite of chicken last night and his throat closed up; he is able to breath, but cannot get a drink of tea down or the chicken to come up; this happen about 5:00 pm yesterday he just crushed up ice and swallowed that without any problem. he does have an inguinal hernia in his groin area which may be causing some of these issues. he is 45, 6 ft 3 inches and weighs 230.

Thank you for asking on HCM! I read your question and understand your concern.

His symptoms seem to be related to an esophageal problem (an abnormal contraction or spasm) or an obstruction from a lesion .

I would recommend to perform a fibrogastroscopy and an x ray of the esophagus with oral contrast. This would help to establish the diagnosis.
