What Causes Pain And Burning Sensation Below The Knee?

My mother had a knee replacement in 1998. It is made of titanium and had started giving her trouble every once in a while a couple of years ago. Now she is having increasing pain over the last few days accompanied with a burning sensation below the knee, upper calf, that is very painful when pressure is applied. Is this a symptom that is directly associated with her knee replacement?
