What Causes Pain And Stiffness In My Fingers?

I am experiencing pain and stiffness in my fingers- mostly my thumb and first finger. It comes and goes, can t pinpoint it to a particular time of day or activity. For the past two years or so I often have pain or stiffness in my neck and back as well. It can travel to different areas. Sometimes I think it might be a pinched nerve or due to physical exercise, but for the past several months it just seems to be constantly stiff and sore. I have no idea if these items are related, but I thought they would be worth mentioning together. The neck I could explain- I play tennis, drive a long distance to and from work, and I thought these two activities might play a role in the pain. But the fingers I can t explain.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Well, there can be many reason for symptoms you mention in query like sign of nerve damage, repetitive stress, injuries, bacterial or viral infections, toxic exposures and systemic diseases such as diabetes and peripheral neuropathy.

There can be other reasons also like nerve entrapment, carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, hormonal imbalances and vitamin deficiencies (vitamin B1).

I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper examination. Doctor may order a CT scan, ask for certain movements and complete blood tests. Doctor may prescribe muscle relaxants, recommend physical therapy of arm and hand along with stretching exercises and recommend particular stretching exercises.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
