What Causes Pain And Swelling In Knuckle Below Index Finger?

I have pain and swelling in the knuckle right below my index finger on my left hand. It causes my finger to feel tight especially if I bend it. It has been coming on gradually over the last couple of months. This morning I had some pain across the top of the palm of my hand right below the 3 middle fingers. It feels better in warm conditions (i.e. the shower). Can you tell me what this possibly could be?
