my wife is getting very sharp pains on her left side of her chest. the pain is higher up her rib cage closer to her arm pit. she said about 4 inches below her arm pit. They last anywhere from 2 -30 seconds. she has no other symptoms other than the sharp pain.

Hi ....

Noted here pain present below left arm pit with no any other complaint....
So nothing seems serious here.....

While doing some unaccoustemed activity or heavy weight lift , muscular strain might there that can lead pain...

If ribs are tender to touch then costochondritis like inflammation of costal cartilage might be cause.

Rest is done....
Avoid movement that lead pain.
Proper sleep posture
If need analgesic taken..

If you develop any other symptom like cough , fever , dyspnea etc then detail history and further work up done.
