What Causes Pain In The Urethra?

I went to the dr for Urethra pain/Urinary urgency. They sent the Urine for a culture, it came back negative. They told me to discontinue the Bactrim, however, I finally started feeling better (day 3 of meds) today although still have slight urethra pain. Should I keep taking them?

Drink plenty of water and drink cranberry juice it is helpful in presenting UTI.
Medicines should be taken only for the prescribed duration.
