What Causes Pain In Upper Legs Of A Person With High Cholesterol?

I had high cholesterol and put on statin for years. Then about a year ago had pain in uper leggs. Had phisio and stopped the statin. Dr. said I should go back on it and did every other day. Yesterday my left pinkie was sore and swollen. Put ice on it several times but still slightly swollen, cant bend little finger without pain. Some of my finger knuckles look weird - floppy looking, other o.k. I also have some knee pain,m left leg, but thought it was from walking a lot and using treadmill, which I have done for 20 years. I am a senior in 80 s,female.

Hello,

Some of the most probable causes of your leg pains are as follows:
1) Statin induced muscle pains
2) Peripheral neuropathy
3) Varicose veins
4) Deep venous thrombosis
5) Other causes of arthritis such as rheumatoid, osteoarthritis
6) Viral myalgias due to infection
7) Reactive arthritis due to infection elsewhere in the body
8) Overexertion on treadmill

Management includes:
1) Statin induced myalgias decrease once statins are stopped. A factor called creatine kinase (CK) increases more than 5 times in statin induced myopathies.
2) In various forms of arthritis there is clear inflammation and swelling of the joint and pains with movement.
3) If it's due to infections, treatment of underlying infection would reduce pain.
4) NSAIDs like Ibuprofen can be taken for pain relief provided your kidneys are normally functioning.
5) If you have a kidney problem, you can skip NSAIDs but use opioids like Tramadol, Oxycodone, Hydrocodone etc.
6) Physiotherapy would help ease the joints and relieves pain.
7) You need to take calcium supplements and if necessary bisphosphonates to halt the progression of osteoporosis.

You may consult your doctor and stop statin for a while to lessen the symptoms. As you have active lifestyle, please do continue the same.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
