What Causes Pain While Urinating?

Hi. Yesterday I went to the bathroom and I had this sharp pain while urinating. It continued after and then it stopped, although my lower abdomen hurt and I felt sick and nauseous. I drank some urinal tea and ate cranberries, and today I felt quite better, although I still feel pain during urinating. Could it be inflamed urinary bladder?

Thank you for asking on HCM

Short answer: Yes, it is urinay tract infection (acute cystitis).

Detailed answer: Based on your introduction, it is urinary tract infetion (acute cystitis).

In such cases I recommend to my patients:
- Drink at least one large glass of liquid every hour.
- Avoid foods that irritate the bladder: caffeine, alcohol, tomatoes, citrus,
and spicy foods.
- Drink cranberry juice to help fight bladder infections. If you dislike the taste of plain cranberry juice, mix it 1:1 with another juice, such as orange juice.

The antibiotic that I would prescribe for you is Bactrim 960 mg one tablet twice daily for five days, and for the pain Pyridium 100mg three times daily for 1 to 2 days (this drug turns urine orange, but nothing to worry).

If the symptoms reoccur within 2 weeks of treatment I will suggest a urine culture and an abdominal ultrasound.

Kindly rate my answer as helpful.
