What Causes Painful Bloating After Eating Food?

Hi, I have been suffering with pain behind and underneath the right side of my ribs along with a number of other symptoms including, severe and painful bloating after meals, heartburn and indigestions, tight feeling in chest and around rib cage like somebody is squeezing me and constant burping. I have had blood count, which was normal, an ultrasound on my lower abdomen and gallbladder but both reports came back normal. I also feel a long hard mass going down the right side of my abdomen and I feel like I can feel it under my ribs while sitting. I am at my wits end with the discomfort and pain and am wondering if there is anything you can suggest it could be and what I should ask my gp for next as I know there is something wrong. Many thanks, Jo

Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

Stomach pain and bloating after eating food could be related to dyspepsia, constipation or acute gastritis or may be hiatus hernia but it needs further evaluation by clinical examination and various tests to have confirmed diagnosis.

If your symptoms are not so troublesome then i can suggest you some medications and dietary precautions to get relieved from this bloating.

1) Proton pump inhibitors (pantoprazole 40 or rabeprazole 20)
2) H2 blockers like Rantac150
3) Syrup digene 2 TSF three times a day
4) Avoid hot, oily and spicy foods rather take bland diet for initial few days
5) Avoid eating full stomach one at a time rather take small and frequent meals.
6) Have soft diet only for next 2 to 3 days

All the medications are available over the counter and if not then you should consult your family physician or some local doctor who will know about the drugs and can prescribe you.

I expect you to get better within 7 to 10 days but if your problem persists then i will advice you to see physician or gastro physician who can order various tests (below mentioned) and can come to a particular diagnosis and start the treatment.

1) routine blood investigations,
2) liver function tests,
3) urine and stool examination for R/M and ova
4) ultrasound of abdomen (already done in your case)
5) upper GI scopy.

Hope this will help you to get better.

Regards,
