Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 5 year old son has been having bright red blood in his stool. I know he is not constipated because he goes on a regular basis and doesnt complain that it hurts when he goes to the bathroom. But he is always telling me there is blood in it and i have seen it a few times when he hasnt flushed it. Also he complains about his left side hurting a lot. Not as much as the stool problem but atleast once a week he complains about his side. Just curious if this is something I should be concerned about.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history and understood your concerns. The commonest cause of bright red blood in stool of a a 5 year old child can be as follows: Intestinal infection. Ulcer in the colon. Ulcer in rectum or anal canal. Polyposis being rare at this age. Thei can be diagnosed by the following: Get the stool tests done. Blood for CBC, bleeding and clotting disorders. A course of an antibiotic, metronidazole can help to eradicate the problems but if the bleeding persists then ano-proctoscopy and pediatric colonoscopy may be needed to ascertain the cause and thus get proper management as needed. Keep him on soft and liquid diet.
