What Causes Periods Twice In A Month?

I am 31 and have been off the pill for a good 6 months. My periods have been irregular lately. I only just had my period 2 weeks ago and have now got it again! Why would this be happening? I normally have very bad cramps the first couple of days, but the last one and this one I have had no pain whatsoever.
